The organisers of OPCA 2022 are delighted to announce that submissions are now open on the theme of ‘Liminality and Hybridity in the Ancient Near East and Beyond’. Please see the full details for submissions below:

CALL FOR PAPERS: OPCA (1-2 APRIL 2022)

ABSTRACT DEADLINE: 28 JANUARY 2022

The organisers of the 10th annual Oxford Postgraduate Conference in Assyriology warmly invite all UK, European and overseas students whose research relates to the ancient world (including Assyriology and Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology as well as Anatolian Studies, Biblical Studies, Classics, and Egyptology) to join us in Oxford (or online) for a two-day conference at Wolfson College on 1-2 April 2022 on the theme:

Liminality and Hybridity in the Ancient Near East and Beyond

The theme intends to encourage dialogue about ancient representations (and the subsequent reception) of liminal or ‘in-between’ states, identities and spaces, as well as critical reflection on scholarly use of hybrid or ‘mixed’ categories and approaches. Papers might relate to the following list of headings (though it is not intended to be prescriptive):

Boundaries and intersections

Influence and interaction

Inscribed and uninscribed

Colonisation and decolonisation

Transitions and transformations

Ambiguities in source material and scholarship

The abstract submission deadline is 28 January 2022. Please submit your proposed paper title and a brief abstract (250 words) to opca@orinst.ox.ac.uk. Papers are to be 20 minutes followed by a plenary panel discussion.

The main aim of the conference is to provide a forum for students at the postgraduate and postdoctoral levels to present their research to a group of peers and establish connections across disciplinary and geographical borders.

Although the conference will be a hybrid event, we intend to provide a limited number of bursaries for travel and accommodation for participants attending from outside of the UK. More information will be provided about the number of bursaries and the application process for a bursary in due course.
